چکیده

The effect of two fungicides, Caocobre and Ridomil on rhizosphere phenomenon of Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L) seedlings has been studied at different stages of the development of the plant growing in pots. Fungal population in the rhizophere soil was generally higher than in the non-rhizosphere soil. The total number of fungal population in both the rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere was highest on the 28 day and thereafter declined. The effect of the fungicides on the mycoflora differed from species to species with no clear cut generalized response. Members of the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium predominated over the other genera encountered namely Cladosporium, Trichoderma, Fusarium, Paecilomyces and Neurospora. In the control seedlings, five Aspergillus species were isolated, namely Aspergillus niger, A. flavus, A. ochraceus, A. sulphureus, and A. fumigatus; four Penicillium species were also isolated, Penicillium digitatum, P. expansum, Penicillium sp. (white) and P. verrucosum var cyclopium. Other species isolated were Trichoderma viride, Paecilomyces varioti, Cladosporium herbarum and Rhizopus oryzae. When Cacaobre was applied repeatedly the following fungal species were encountered in the rhizosphere region of the soil: A. niger, A. flavus, A. ochraceus (after 28 days only) P. digitatum, P. verrucosum var cyclopium, Fusarium sp., T. Viride, Paecilomyces varioti, Cladosporium herbarum and Rhizopus sp. Ridomil application showed similar trend.

ESTABLISHMENT OF THE FUNGAL ENTOMOPATHOGEN Beauveria bassiana AS AN ENDOPHYTE IN COCOA PODS (Theobroma cacao L.) ESTABLECIMIENTO DEL HONGO ENTOMOPATÓGENO Beauveria bassiana COMO ENDÓFITO EN FRUTOS DE CACAO (Theobroma cacao L.)

The entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana was re-isolated from surface sterilized pieces of the cocoa pod outer section and peduncle, two and three months after flowers of greenhouse cocoa plants were hand-pollinated and sprayed with a 1x107 mL-1 suspension of B. bassiana conidia. The colonization frequency of B. bassiana on cocoa pods was 0.8% and 1.3% two and three months post-spraying o...

Establishment of the fungal entomopathogen Beauveria bassiana (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) as an endophyte in cocoa seedlings (Theobroma cacao).

The fungal entomopathogen Beauveria bassiana became established as an endophyte in in vitro-grown cocoa seedlings tested for up to 2 mo after inoculation to the radicle with B. bassiana suspensions. The fungus was recovered in culture from stems, leaves and roots. B. bassiana also was detected as an epiphyte 1 and 2 mo postinoculation. Penicillium oxalicum and five bacterial morphospecies also ...

Metal Fractionation in Soils Collected from Selected Cocoa Plantations in Ogun State, Nigeria

Nigerian cocoa farmers mostly use copper-based fungicides to control black pod disease of Theobroma cacao. Heavy metals are potentially toxic to soil microbes and soil environment in general. Toxicity depends on chemical association in soil. For this reason, determining the chemical forms of metals in soils is important to evaluate their mobility and bioavailability. Sequential extraction was u...
